Owerri, Imo State– The 8th National Convention of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, spotlighted the critical role of the media in fostering democracy, promoting accountability, and encouraging good governance. The two-day event, organized by the NUJ to coincide with its national leadership elections, brought together journalists, media experts, and stakeholders to discuss the theme: “Media and Democracy: The Role of Journalists in Holding Leaders Accountable.”

In his opening address, Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma commended journalists for their resilience and dedication to nation-building. He emphasized the importance of an independent media as a cornerstone of democracy and a watchdog over governance.

“An independent press is the foundation of democracy and a vital monitor of government activities,” said Uzodimma. He stressed the need for factual reporting, impartial journalism, and truthfulness to combat misinformation and inspire public confidence.

The governor also praised the leadership of the NUJ for its efforts in advancing journalism in Nigeria and urged a peaceful transition during the union's elections.

National NUJ President, Comrade Chris Isiguzo, called on journalists to remain steadfast despite challenges such as harassment, economic difficulties, and limited press freedom. He reaffirmed the union's commitment to promoting truth, unity, and excellence in journalism.

“Journalists must rise above intimidation, continue to educate leaders on their responsibilities to the people, and prioritize ethical reporting,” said Isiguzo. He also urged collaboration among journalists and adherence to professional standards, rather than pursuing sensationalism with unverified news.

The chairman of the Occasion, Senator Osita Ozunaso, OFR, highlighted the need for journalists to own media outlets to ensure financial independence and sustainability in the profession.

“Journalists should consider establishing their own media platforms to foster sustainability and contribute significantly to nation-building,” said Ozunaso. He also encouraged delegates to elect leaders who would prioritize the rights and development of members and the journalism profession.

Ozunaso applauded the ingenuity and professionalism of Nigerian journalists, noting that they have continued to thrive despite numerous challenges.

The conference featured in-depth discussions on the role of the media in advancing democracy, promoting rural development, and addressing contemporary ethical issues in journalism. Experts and participants underscored the need for collaboration among journalists, policymakers, and civil society organizations to strengthen the media as a vital component of democratic governance.

The event will conclude with the election of new NUJ executives, which is expected to set a new direction for the union. Delegates expressed optimism that the outcomes of the conference would address longstanding industry challenges while fostering innovation and integrity in journalism.

In a closing statement, participants agreed on the need for Nigerian journalism to undergo reforms to meet the demands of a rapidly changing society while continuing to deliver accurate information, educate the public, and hold leaders accountable.
